Our Library Information
Welcome to the Oliver Elementary Library Media Center—a place where curiosity grows, readers thrive, and learning comes to life. We strive to provide a welcoming environment where students discover new books, build information literacy skills, explore technology, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Vision:
Our vision is to cultivate dynamic, inclusive library media centers that foster literacy appreciation, inspire curiosity, support academic excellence, and prepare all learners to thrive in a global, information rich society. We envision libraries as collaborative hubs where knowledge, creativity, and innovation flourish.
Mission:
The mission of the Oliver Library Media Program is to empower all students and educators to become effective users and creators of information and ideas by providing equitable access to diverse resources, technologies, and instructional support. In alignment with the Alabama Course of Study and Alabama Guidelines for Exemplary School Libraries, our program fosters a culture of inquiry, literacy, ethical digital citizenship, and lifelong learning.

Our library is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Each class has a scheduled bi-weekly 30 minute class visit. During that time classes will have a mini lesson and/or read aloud and book exchange. Open Access is available daily during specified times, allowing students to use library resources and receive individual/small group assistance from the media specialist. Teachers may also sign up to bring their enitre class for a collaborative lesson or an extra book exchange.

Grades:
Library does not have a class grade on student’s reports cards. However, often library work is graded and given to content area teachers to include in subject specific grades. For example, if we are researching animals in the library, the work may be graded and given to the science teacher to include in the science grade.

Students in Pre-K - First are allowed to have one item checked out at a time. Second - Fifth graders are allowed to have two items checked out. Fourth- Fifth graders that reach their individual AR goals may check out three books for the remainder of the year. All students can keep the items for two weeks. Students may renew a book for additional time. Lost or damaged books have a $15 fine. We do not charge for late books.

The library houses approximately 8,000 items for student use. Follett Destiny Library Manager, an automated circulation system, is used district-wide, which enables each RCSD library access to the library collections at all schools in the district. Destiny can be accessed from anywhere, 24/7, helping to strengthen the bond between the library, the classroom, and home.

The school library provides students with access to books, digital resources, and engaging learning experiences that promote literacy, research skills, creativity, and a lifelong love of reading. The library also supports faculty and staff by providing instructional resources, research assistance, and collaborative learning opportunities that enhance teaching and student achievement.
